Food/drink vendor FAQs
If you are selling food and/or drinks, it is imperative you understand the rules and regulations surrounding food permits. If you do not abide by these rules and regulations, the health department can shut you down.
The FAQs below will help prepare you for the market so you can sell unimpeded. Here are some important notes:
When in doubt, you need a food permit! If you are selling food/drinks, you should always assume that you need a food permit. Why? Because virtually all food and drink vendors at the market need food permits!
If you do not get a food permit and do not abide by the rules and regulations concerning food safety, you can be shut down by the health department. We are not responsible if you get shut down for failure to get a food permit and follow other relevant rules and regulations.
If you think you’re covered by the Missouri’s cottage food law, you probably aren’t. Again, when in doubt, you need a food permit! See the FAQs below for more information about cottage food/the Missouri Cottage Law.
Please contact the St. Louis City Department of Health if you are unsure whether you need a food permit or have other permit-related questions. Their number is 314-612-5100, and you can visit their website here.

There are some exceptions, but the answer is generally a resounding “Yes!” Having a food permit is essential for most vendors selling food and/or drinks. If you do not have a permit, the health department can shut you down, and the health department visits every market!
In general, you will need to purchase a Traditional Temporary Food Permit if you plan to sell or sample food/drinks. You can apply for your food permit through the St. Louis City Department of Health. You must submit and pay for your Temporary Food Permit at least two business days prior to the market you are obtaining the permit for or you will incur a $10 charge for an expedited application. You can buy permits for multiple events at once if you’d like to buy them together. Fees are payable by a business check, cashier's check, or money order only. The Department of Health does not accept cash or credit cards for food permits.

The only foods covered under the cottage law are baked goods (bread, cookies, cakes, etc.), canned jellies and jams (except sugar-free ones), and dried herbs/herb mixes. Salsas and pickles are not covered. Any vendor selling pickles, salsas, BBQ sauce, cut produce (including fruits and vegetables), freeze-dried foods, hot sauce, sprouts, or wild mushrooms need to be working in a regulated kitchen under routine inspection. These items cannot be prepared at home; they must be made in a commissary kitchen or prepared on-site with a permit.
Cottage foods moreover cannot cross state lines. While we live in a bi-state area, any cottage food produced in Illinois cannot be sold in Missouri. Foods prepared in a commercial kitchen under routine inspection, however, can cross state lines; the aforementioned restriction on selling food that crosses state lines only applies to cottage food made at home.
The person who made the cottage food (or a member of the household with extensive knowledge about the product) needs to be on-site at our market to ensure that questions about the process can be answered for customers.
For more information, please call the St. Louis City Department of Health at 314-612-5100 or visit their website here. You can view the full Missouri Cottage Law here.

Any vendor providing samples needs a temporary food permit, hand sink (with soap and paper towels), and extra utensils or a three-compartment sink set up with soap and sanitizer. This applies to all samples including beverages, with and without ice.
-
Food not prepared on-site needs proper labels that include full name and address, common name of the food you are selling, a list of ingredients by weight, net weight of the container, and a list of allergens.
However, food prepared off-site from a permitted kitchen intended for immediate consumption does not need labeling (for example, ingredients for a rice bowl to be eaten immediately). This is predicated on there being someone on-site with extensive knowledge of the cooking process to answer any questions from patrons. It is good practice to have ingredient and allergen information on-site, but it is not required. To ensure you are prepared, the health department recommends keeping this information in a binder or folder with your permit receipts and past inspection reports; that way, this information will be handy for anyone who asks.
All pre-packaged foods need to be labeled. The name and address refers to the name of the company and address of where the food was prepared. Listing the city and state is acceptable (for example, Betty's Baked Goods: St. Louis, MO). This information is required in the event of a foodborne illness outbreak for purposes of traceability. Moreover, each individual item needs its own label on the food item. For example, if a vendor is selling individually wrapped cookies, each cookie needs a label. If a vendor is selling four types of cookies, each one needs a label with the specific ingredients used.

No, we do not. We only provide a booth space for you to use and marketing and other organizational services related to running the market as a whole. You must bring your own tent, tables, chairs, sandbags, water, and so on, just like you have to for most other markets and festivals.
-
No, we do not. If you need electricity, you will have to find a way to supply it yourself. Generators, especially noisy ones, are not expressly prohibited, but they are discouraged (quiet generators are just fine). In place of electrical equipment, you can use sternos, gas heating, and coolers. Be prepared to supply your own water as well.
General vendor FAQs
Whether you’re selling food, drinks, goods, or services, here are some general vendor FAQs that will help prepare you for the market! Below you will find some important notes:
When in doubt, you need a food permit! View the food/drink vendor FAQs above for more information. If you do not get a food permit and do not abide by the rules and regulations concerning food safety, you can be shut down by the health department. We are not responsible in the unfortunate event this happens to you, so it is imperative your know, understand, and abide by all food safety rules.
Be prepared to bring your own gear. We do not provide tents, tables, chairs, weights, water, or electricity. The foregoing may sound Spartan, but most vendors thrive at the market bringing entirely their own gear, just like you would at most other markets and festivals.
Be patient. After you apply to become an official STL Vegan Market vendor, we will generally take 1-2 weeks to process your application. We will also send you semi-regular vendor emails with relevant updates as each market nears after we accept your application.
The market is a great sales opportunity! Reaching nearly 1,000,000 views since the start of the year, STL Vegan Market has become the most attended and advertised event in St. Louis. 800+ people attend every market, and there is almost nowhere better to be than if you are a vegan vendor!

We hold STL Vegan Market on the second Saturday of the month every month from April through October. The April and September markets will be held from 3-7 p.m. and the October market from 2-6 p.m. due to early sunset. The rest will be held from 4-8 p.m.
-
The current rate is $50/market for all for-profit businesses. If you are tabling on behalf of a nonprofit organization, however, you are welcome to attend free of charge! We intend to keep these low rates through the end of 2025.
-
We generally admit everyone who applies, but we do occasionally reject applicants who show no desire or interest in providing vegan offerings at our market and/or do not seem to understand what veganism is and entails. We will reach out for clarification in the event a vendor seems to have a honest misunderstanding or forgets to include certain information.
If we exceed vendor capacity, we will weigh several factors to determine your admission. These factors include the extent to which your business is vegan, your history of participation in the market, and whether you are local to St. Louis. -
We have rolling admissions and accept applications every day of the year. We will email you using the email you applied with to let you know our decision within one month of applying. However, processing times will typically be significantly quicker, with most applications taking 1-2 weeks to process. If you are accepted, you will receive an email with the payment link at least two weeks in advance of our next market following your acceptance.

Given the low cost of vending and the need to streamline operations, we do not offer refunds. However, we are happy to apply your vendor fee to a future market. That way, your vendor fee never goes to waste! Please notify us in writing at stlveganmarket@gmail.com if you would like to transfer your vendor fee to another market.
-
You may set up the day of the event up to two hours prior to the official start of the market. If you need to arrive more than two hours in advance of the official event start time, please email us at stlveganmarket@gmail.com to discuss potential accommodations. We require all vendors to arrive at least one hour prior to the official start of the market and be fully set up at least 30 minutes prior to the official event start.
-
We will only cancel the market if the weather is unsafe. Otherwise, we hold the market rain or shine!
